Agility's Digit 5 humanoid robots drop the safety cage and aim at shared factory floors

On September 15 Agility Robotics unveiled Digit 5 for cooperatively safe work beside people, with 50-pound lifts and EU plans. Buyers and sellers on a humanoid marketplace should treat cage-free Digit inventory as a different asset class than fenced Digit 4 units.

Humanoid robots spent years earning trust inside fenced cells while people walked the aisles outside. On September 15, Agility Robotics pulled the curtain on Digit 5, a biped it says is built for cooperatively safe work at scale without those physical barriers. CEO Peggy Johnson framed the launch as a response to three years of Digit 4 hours on customer floors, backed by more than $300 million in multi-year Digit 5 orders the company had already disclosed. For buyers, sellers, and operators on Buy My Robots, the news is not another Fremont hiring story. It is a hardware and safety architecture bet that changes which humanoid SKUs you can legally and practically run beside hourly staff.

What Agility announced on September 15

Agility's primary release calls Digit 5 the first Agility humanoid engineered for cooperatively safe work at scale. The robot is meant to detect people, signal intent, and stop or sit when someone enters an unsafe envelope, instead of relying on permanent guarding around every aisle.

The safety stack has three named layers. Human detection uses proprietary algorithms and multiple sensors to avoid, halt, or drop into a seated posture when people are nearby. Visual and auditory cues broadcast motion intent so nearby workers can participate in safe operation. A separate safety controller watches distance violations and triggers responses without waiting on the main motion planner.

Agility says Digit 5 builds on an independent field evaluation for industrial safety on a customer production line tied to U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration expectations. Treat that as a milestone on a longer standards path, not a blanket waiver for every plant layout. The company also highlights work on ANSI/A3 technical report R15.108 for dynamically stable mobile robots and ISO 25785-1 for humanoid safety internationally.

Bloomberg's September 15 coverage emphasizes the industry pattern Agility is trying to break: most factory automation still separates robots from people. Digit 5 is pitched for loading equipment, sorting parts, sequencing, and inspection in shared space, a wider task menu than Digit 4's tote-centric reputation.

Hardware that backs up the cage-free claim

Trade press from The Robot Report on September 15 notes visible mechanical changes, including more human-like legs replacing the earlier ostrich-knee look. Agility's Robotics 24/7 brief lists the numbers buyers will paste into procurement spreadsheets.

Digit 5 weighs about 284 pounds, stands 5 feet 11 inches, and reaches up to roughly 7.2 feet with arms extended, up from about 5.5 feet on Digit 4. The company claims about 40 percent more payload capacity, with repeatable lifts up to 50 pounds aimed at single-person OSHA lift tasks in U.S. facilities.

Battery economics changed sharply. Agility cites about 90 minutes of runtime per pack, nine-minute charging, and a 10:1 run-to-charge ratio versus Digit 4's 2:1, which the company translates into more than 20 hours of productive work across a 24-hour day with swapping. Swappable ISO-flange grippers let one biped move from tote handling toward machine tending without treating end-effectors as permanent welds.

On software, Agility still sells physical AI training for new behaviors and Agility Arc fleet management with warehouse and manufacturing execution hooks. Digit 4's public field stats, including more than 65,000 operational hours and a 100,000-tote milestone at GXO's Flowery Branch site in November 2025, are the baseline Digit 5 claims to extend, not replace.

NVIDIA Halos, Europe, and the 2027 delivery window

Agility named itself the first launch partner for NVIDIA's Halos for Robotics platform, pairing Digit 5 with NVIDIA IGX Thor and Halos Core infrastructure and using NVIDIA's Halos AI Systems Inspection Lab to speed safety certification work. NVIDIA robotics lead Deepu Talla's quoted support ties the humanoid story to edge compute buyers already spec Thor for other embodied pilots.

Geography matters for secondary markets. Agility plans first commercial Digit deployments outside North America in the European Union and United Kingdom, with CE marking and related regulatory marks expected for Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Early access is slated for the first half of 2027, with general availability for manufacturing, warehouse, and distribution operators by the end of 2027.

That timeline sits beside Tesla Optimus Academy builds at Fremont, Figure's paid logistics deployments, and Unitree's sub-$20,000 G1+ refresh this week. Agility is not racing Unitree on list price. It is racing on whether a buyer's insurer and safety engineer will sign a shared-floor layout without retrofitting miles of fencing.

What marketplace users should do with Digit 5

If you buy or sell humanoid robots on listings, treat September 15 as a generation break inside the Agility line, similar to how automakers split model years when airbags or crash structures change.

Ask whether the serial is Digit 4 in a fenced tote workflow or a Digit 5 configured for cooperative safety. Firmware branches, safety case files, and training records will not transfer by default. A Digit 4 with documented GXO hours may still be the right asset for a cage-only pilot. A Digit 5 preorder slot is a different bet on labor layout and European export.

Verify order language against Agility's May 2026 disclosure that more than $300 million of multi-year Digit 5 orders remain subject to contractual milestones. Backlog is not delivered robots. Secondary pricing should track milestone dates, Arc subscription terms, and which end-effector package the factory quote includes.

Compare insurance and union site rules early. Cooperative safety marketing does not replace your local risk assessment. Bring ANSI and ISO work-in-progress references to the conversation, but insist on the customer's signed safety file for the exact cell you are buying.

If you operate beside Tesla Optimus pilots or Boston Dynamics Atlas timelines, use Digit 5 as a reference design for what "shared floor" means in 2026: explicit human detection, independent safety controllers, and standards engagement, not a demo reel alone.

Humanoid robots are finally being sold on whether they can stand next to a person without a fence. Agility shipped the spec sheet on September 15. The marketplace homework is proving which units on listings actually match that spec, and which are still cage-era inventory with a fresh paint scheme.
